We train our soldiers for war, we give them guns, and we send them away. But how do we bring them back? Many soldiers come back from the war with amputations and scares they can never forget and never get rid of. Most commonly soldiers come home with Post-Traumatic-Stress Disorder also known as PTSD. This is a mental health problem that some people develop after experiencing or witnessing a life threatening event, like combat, a natural disaster, a car accident, or sexual assault. Combat, this is exactly what psychologist Hector Garcia is effectively trying to cure. Hector Garcia is a renowned psychologist based out of Texas who uses his skills to rehabilitate veterans back into society. He uses a step by step program with a variety of therapy treatments into one major treatment. Within the first minute of his TED talk Garcia says “Now, I became a psychologist to help migrant human suffering, and for the past 10 years, my target has been the suffering caused by PTSD.” In his TED talk he uses more ethos than pathos, but I wouldn’t go as far to say that pathos is never used because after all this is a video talking about PTSD in soldiers. Garcia believes “that the best treatments for PTSD use many of the very same training principles that the military uses in preparing its trainees for war.” The first step in his step by step therapy treatment is cognitive therapy, this is a type of mental recalibration. Cognitive therapy is a type of psychotherapy where they attempt to control and get rid of any negative patterns of thoughts about yourself and the world, it is also used to treat mood disorders such as depression. The next step is exposure therapy, this is a kind if field training, and the fastest of the proven effective treatments out there. Exposure therapy involves exposing patients to the feared object with no danger, in order to overcome their anxiety. This form of therapy is difficult on many who go through the treatment, but in the end it proves effective. Psychologist Hector Garcia seems to be a very reliable source, he is now a professor of psychiatry at the university of Texas Health Science center. His version of therapy treatment helped many veterans back into living their lives. I believe that Garcia’s treatment plan was very effective to help these struggling veterans. It might not be effective for everyone because of the intence amount of anxiety and pain you ave to push through to complete the steps. I like Garcia’s main point and what he stood for. This treatment can help out so many struggling victims trying to recover from the affect of PTSD. From this video I’ve taken away usuful information about PTSD and how to treat it. Now I know proper ways to treat PTSD, by pushing through to the other side of the tunnel. I couldn’t find any conncections to things we’ve read or watched in class, so I took further to read an article on the TED talks suggestion page. In the TED talk video Hector Garcia says “ We put some veterns on heavy drugs. Others we hospitilized and gave genetic group therapy, and others we simply said to them “Just go home and try and forget about your experiences.” This reminds me of a quote from the book Tribe: On Homecoming and Belonging, “Today closely shared combat experiences light up ancient parts of the brain that make men relish the interconnection of combat. But the resulting sense of belonging often bleeds away when veterans return from war to our modern, insular ways of living.” (Sebastian Jungar). The last sentence of the quote connects to the TED talk because it is also reffering to the way veterans are different after coming back from war. I come from a Military family, my grandfather on my mothers side of the family, my grandfather on my fathers side of the family, my dad in Desert Storm, and now my cousin. Some of my closest friends even want to join different branches of the Military. Just like anyone else I want to see them come home safely, friends, family, and even the people I have no relation to. In the end they are all fighting for our freedom. Anyone with someone in the Military family or not say they want them to come home safely. This can be related to the American Dream and even the Global Dream. We want our troops to come home safely and we want them back into the lives that they diserve to be living. For these people and these families, getting through PTSD gets them one step closer to their version of the American Dream.
